2019 Porsche Macan vs BMW X3 Comparison for Chicago, IL
Looking for a powerful compact SUV with the luxury and safety your family deserves? When researching luxury compact SUVs, there are two models that are commonly compared: the 2019 Porsche Macan vs the 2019 BMW X3.
These close contenders offer similar style, but reviews show the Macan is unmatched when it comes to performance and standard luxury features, such as genuine leather seats and advanced safety technology.
2019 Porsche Macan vs BMW X3 Performance
The 2019 Porsche Macan is available in three trims with increasingly powerful engines. The base 3.0L V6 puts out 238 horsepower with a top speed of 141 mph. The Macan S pushes it to 348 horsepower with a 0-60 mph of just 4.9 seconds using the same engine as the Porsche Cayenne and Panamera. The top-end Macan GTS provides 360 horsepower with a 159 mph top speed as well as a range of features to improve its athleticism, such as lowered suspension, sharpened handling, and improved traction.
Each Macan model is available with the Porsche-exclusive Sport Chrono package, which boosts engine performance, improves the chassis, and refines the sporty suspension.
The 2019 BMW X3 features only two engines. One is a smaller base engine, a 2.0L engine providing 248 horsepower. The sportier BMW X3 M40i trim comes in with slightly more power using a 3.0L six-cylinder engine which puts out 355 horsepower. However, even the M40i model is slower than the mid-level Macan S, with the BMW achieving a 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds with a much lower top speed of 130 mph.
The 2019 Porsche Macan comes standard with all-wheel drive compared to the X3's standard rear-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is available on the BMW, but it will cost you extra. The Macan also comes out ahead on torque, with 273 lb-ft vs the X3's 258 lb-ft.
Porsche also offers a unique suspension system that is unmatched by BMW. For more precise handling, the PASM—Porsche Active Suspension Management—adjusts each individual wheel for sharper response.
2019 Porsche Macan vs BMW X3 Exterior
The 2019 Porsche Macan is the newest of its generation with an all-new exterior design. The new tail light design is sleeker and better frames the prestigious Porsche logo. The rear wheelhouses have also been tailored to match the famous Porsche 911.
While these two models have nearly identical wheelbases and overall lengths, the Macan is about two inches broader than the X3 with a slightly lower height for a more aggressive styling on the Porsche.
Perhaps most obviously, the Porsche Macan offers exterior color options that aren't available in the BMW lineup. Porsche's options include bold and vivid colors, such as the bright Miami Blue, the luscious Mamba Green, and the fiery Carmine Red. These colors can also be applied to the wheels and interior trim for a unique, head-turning style inside and out. With the BMW X3, exterior color options are limited to more neutral colors, and they don't carry over to other trim materials.
2019 Porsche Macan vs BMW X3 Interior
The re-designed 2019 Porsche Macan keeps the beloved features of previous model years while adding additional innovations, such as the new optional air ionizer that improves the interior air quality. The Macan comes standard with 14-way power-adjusting genuine leather and Alcantara (synthetic suede) materials. Optional upgrades include 18-way adjustable seats, heated and ventilated seats, front sports seats, and heated steering wheel—all very reasonable for the variable weather in Chicago, IL.
The BMW X3's standard synthetic leather seats are 10-way adjustable which can be upgraded to 14-way. The range of heated and ventilated seats are the same for the X3, minus the sports seat option.
2019 Porsche Macan vs BMW X3 Technology
These two models show a notable difference in standard technology. The 2019 Porsche Macan features an 11” HD touchscreen console that is connected with the proprietary Porsche Communication Management system. With this system, you can customize your home screen and menus to make your technology work for you. The 2019 Macan has also brought improvements to the voice recognition software to keep you more hands-free on the road. Through the Porsche Communication Management system, you can also access navigation with real-time traffic as well as standard smartphone integration for both Android and Apple phones.
In contrast, the X3's standard touchscreen is nearly half the size, at 6.5”. BMW models do not connect with Android Auto like Porsche vehicles. The Macan also stands apart with its rear-seat entertainment system and is the only of the two models to offer the premier Burmester surround sound system.
When it comes to safety tech, these two models are mostly even, but the X3 does not come with any standard features—they will cost extra. The Macan comes standard with front and rear parking senors, rear view camera, and lane departure alerts. Both models offer upgrades that include lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, surround-view camera, and adaptive cruise control, among other modern safety features.
